FOREST HILL (CBS 11 NEWS) – Her cafeteria co-workers and Dagget Elementary School students are used to seeing Mary Sanchez smiling, but this week they understand if she isn’t so happy.

It was three days ago that Sanchez was greeted, at the end of the street where she lives, by a police officer. Her 12-year-old daughter Amanda translated for us as Mary told the story of what happened.

“He took her to the house and when she got there her house was all burned. She [doesn’t] want to remember, because all her animals died.”

In all, five pet dogs and several pet birds died in the fire, which investigators say may have started in the chimney or an electrical circuit.

Sanchez explained that her insurance will pay to rebuild the house, but not for any lost possessions or a place to stay in the meantime.

Mary Sanchez and her husband, along with their children, Amanda and her son Juvelio, now basically have nothing. A church paid for five nights at a hotel.

But where will they be in a week? Sanchez paused for a long time after hearing the question and began shaking her head slowly.

“I don’t know,” she almost whispered. “I don’t know.”

Fellow Dagget Elementary cafeteria co-worker Tearesa Monsivais said, “We cannot imagine going through something like that. It’s just sad.”

Sanchez’ co-workers are trying to organize a fundraiser. Some bring clothes to help.

“We’re praying for her,” Mosivais said. “We’re doing the best we can.”

Translating for her mother Amanda said, “She has her heartbroken. She needs to move on for her family and for her.”

But right now Sanchez has only her family, her friends’ support and a very uncertain future.
